神奈川県相模大野にあるSTUDIO_ONOにおいてのa_sight_project内で展示発表。

a_sight_projectについて

White Scenery 2006

2006 ink jet print
print size 817×1027mm, 3 pieces

The third series of the White Scenery. There are two photographs which have a space between them. The purpose of having that space is that viewer can imagine what is there in that blank space between the photographs.

un extract from University journal No37 of Musashino Art University in 2006 Essay on the “White Scenery” series

I constantly take photographs on thick fog as my subject whose series are entitled as “White Scenery”. I aim to capture what I can see even the sight is very limited under certain condition. I may want to capture almost invisible things by following traces of what is there.

Photograph is only the image on the piece of printing paper. It does not have any width or depth itself. However, the image I have in my mind became the image as photography, then, the image on my photography turns into another image by being seen by the third-party. It is just the material of the printing paper, but it surely exists there by delivering the image which could be turned into thousands of different one by people who see my photography. It can be said that we all have the image as the code to perceive what we see.

Image is the fundamental thing to perceive and to be aware of what we see. You can not either touch or seize it, but it is the clue to feel the existence.

The repetition of seeing the image seems to be important for me to create my own image.

What I hope is that what I capture could be the key for people to imagine something. What I express through my photograph makes meaning only when the third party creates their own image through my photograph. Creating my own image is the best way that I can find a reality of the existence and to perceive the world surrounding myself.

About “a_sight_project”
“a_sight_project” is the project which was launched by the media producer Shinji SODA and myself in 2006. What we aim is to create the image by making it responds to the existing place. The work we show at the “a_sight_project” gives the different image from the one it originally was by putting them on that specific existing space.

The first “a_sight_project” which was entitled as “recollection” took place at the studio called STUDIO_ONO in Kanagawa prefecture. The studio was actually in the ruined building. The exhibition space was chosen since we wanted to show our work at the place where it has no connection to art-marketing and so that the work finds its meaning by purely making it displayed in the existing space which are not meant to be used for showing the art work.

What I create for the first “a_sight_project” is the image which just framed out the space at the studio. Also, Mr. SODA and I did the installation work which reconstructs what we see from the building by filming it.

More description on the first “a_sight_project” entitled “recollection”
Exhibition space has its own image which comes from the atmosphere the space itself has. How we perceive the sights is different from our sociological and historical view, or moreover, epistemic view. However, we can all have the sense that something is different here and there, and common understanding on the sights can be shared only when we feel the sights on spot and we might be able to call that common understanding as recollection. For instance, when we say ruin, we know the definition of the word “ruin”, but how we perceive and understand the ruin differs people to people. However, if we are at the ruin together and feel some characteristic atmosphere there, it makes us share the common notion of that specific ruin and that can be lead to have the notion of recollection. What I intend to do is to expand that common notion of the characteristic of the sights and make the photography I take has some other meaning. The image people find in my photography intentionally put in the certain sites is a consequence of the photography I take.
